Do reviews actually change revenue?
Yes, measurably. In the largest study of real transaction data — 200,000 U.S. businesses — companies that reply to at least a quarter of their reviews earn 35% more than average, and businesses with nine or more fresh reviews in the last 90 days earn 52% more. Three-quarters of businesses reply to none. The data is correlational, but the pattern holds across industries.

Do Google reviews affect local search ranking?
Yes — Google says so itself: “More reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.” In the 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local-SEO experts, review signals account for about 20% of what decides a map-pack position, with rating, review count, recency, and a steady inflow of new reviews all among the top 14 factors.

How many reviews does a business need — and how recent?
Enough to clear the customer’s threshold, and fresh enough to count. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 47% of consumers won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% only care about reviews from the last three months. Businesses with more than nine fresh reviews per quarter earn 52% more than average, according to Womply’s transaction data.

What star rating do customers require?
Four stars is the floor, and a perfect five is not the goal. In 2026, 68% of consumers will only use a business rated 4.0 or higher (up from 55% a year earlier), and 31% require 4.5 or more. Yet purchase likelihood peaks between 4.0 and 4.7 and falls as ratings approach 5.0 — buyers read a flawless score as too good to be true.

How fast should a business respond to reviews?
Within days, not weeks. Only 7% of consumers say they don’t expect a reply at all; 81% expect one within a week, and 19% expect it the same day. A personal answer matters more than speed alone: generic or templated responses make half of consumers less likely to choose a business.
Average reply time is a number worth tracking. It moves from days to hours when a draft is ready the moment a review lands.

Does replying to reviews change anything?
It nearly doubles the pool of customers willing to choose you. 88% of consumers would use a business that replies to all of its reviews, versus 47% for one that replies to none. Replying also changes the reviews themselves: a peer-reviewed study of hotels found that responders gained 12% more reviews and a 0.12-star higher rating.

Will customers accept AI-written review replies?
Yes — when a person stays in the loop. In a blind test, 58% of consumers preferred the AI-written reply without knowing which one it was. But 46% say a reply that feels automated makes them suspect fake reviews, and 64% would rather companies not use AI in customer service at all. The answer is AI drafts with human approval, which is how ReputationSystems works.

Can reviews warn you before a problem costs money?
Yes — review text predicts problems that inspectors find later. Researchers at Harvard and Yelp trained a model on restaurant reviews that identified severe hygiene violators with over 82% accuracy, and New York City’s health department found three unreported food-poisoning outbreaks by scanning 294,000 Yelp reviews. What customers write is operational data.

What is one star worth in your industry?
More than most marketing budgets. Independent restaurants earn 5–9% more revenue per extra Yelp star, and an extra half-star makes a restaurant sell out 49% more often. Hotels can charge 11.2% more per rating point at the same occupancy. 69% of patients won’t consider a provider under 4.0, 70% of car buyers weigh dealer reviews, and 78% of consumers use reviews to choose a bank.

Do AI assistants use reviews to recommend businesses?
Increasingly, yes. 45% of consumers now use AI tools such as ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier, and 97% of them cross-check the answer against review platforms. Local-SEO experts rate review signals at 16% of AI-search visibility. The reviews you answer today are the evidence an assistant quotes tomorrow.
